Great British Bake Off Challenge
Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 11:25PM
I love almondy things, to the point that I would happily sit down and eat an entire block of marzipan. So Battenburg, one of the challenges on the great British bake off, is right up my street. I have never made one before, mainly because it looks like a bit of a faff and fiddle, but also because I'd eat the entire thing, and would be considerably larger than I am. I do love a challenge though, and since I was palming the calorie laden coffee and walnut battenburg onto my appreciative work colleagues, it was all fine.
The recipe can be found here:

The finished result was pretty good, although it could have looked slightly better. It tasted very nice though and I had a fight on my hands trying to wrestle it off my husband so I could take it to work.

Yum. This picture makes me hungry. Haha. Thanks for the recipe and congratulations for finishing the challenge. You did well!
Thanks :-)
I love almondy things too! It'll be my first time for the recipe. I wish it would be a success just like your first attempt. Wish me luck.
Just pray to the battenburg god and she will help you :-)
That big chunk looks very tasty! And I really imagined you wrestling your husband. LOL. I hope you enjoyed the bake off.
Almonds! I wonder why they're so addicting. Do you know why?
Haha! It was very difficult and he has been on to me again to make him one :-)
I dont know, they are quite a distinct flavour so people either love or hate marzipan.
I'm glad you were able to resist temptation and was able to come up with this amazing recipe. I'm sure it tastes just as great as it looks! Oh, with all those almonds.
It was a recipe from a tv programme so I can't claim to have devised it myself but it was very tasty ;-)
The cake looks amazing! I would love to attempt to make it but am slightly nervous on how well I would be able to assemble the cakes, or whether the cakes will spill over in the pan (if using foiled lined parchment) but after seeing your cake, I will have to try in the new year.
Yeah give it a go. I had to do a fair bit of trimming to get it even and it was still a bit hit and miss. It tasted delicious though :-)
